Assignment #1

From the beginning of the book, chapters 1-3, I have gotten to read about quit a few characters. The book starts off with Robert Cohn, a Jewish, Ivy League, skinny, and smart guy who decides to join boxing to get built as well as taking his anger out in the rink rather that in public. Jacob, Robert's tennis friend, is telling the story from his point of view. The setting, in the beginning of the novel, takes place at Princeton and the gym where Robert trains. From there it switches to the Americas, where Robert leaves to publish his first novel and comes back a huge success; later it went from the Americas to Paris where Robert and Jacob now live. I also got to read about Brett- a very close lady friend of Jacob's, Frances- Robert's current girlfriend/wife, Braddocks- Robert's literary friend, and Georgette- a woman whom Jacob met on the streets and took her out to dinner. I really can't say what conflict there was in these few chapters, but I do think that some how, some way Brett and Jacob will get together regardless if they want to or not. I also believe that Robert will think that he is too good for Frances and will leave her, which would lead to his unhappiness as well as growing old and lonely for the rest of his life, because the girls he may meet are girls that only want him for his money, and he will not have that around all his life.

  1. I agree with the first prediction you have made. It seems like there is a connection between them. I do not however, neccesarily agree with your second prediction. He will be upset, but I have a feeling that for some reason Frances will leave him. Its just a thought though.
